Ethics Case Study
Where We Are In Today's Culture

The Situation:
A teacher, after responding to the survey and submitting her questionnaire, requested this site's creator and operator's permission to copy EthicsSurvey.com.  The ensuing dialogue is presented verbatim below.

The Dialogue:
Teacher's initial inquiry:

I would like to use this survey with my high school students, can I copy what you have a make an online poll?

Creative Team's response:

Dear [Name withheld],

It is no wonder that on the questionnaire you submitted you responded that it is possible to teach ethics to college students.
The answer to that question in today's environment with today's so-called teachers, is "No, it is not possible to teach ethics in college" or after college.

Your desire to copy our survey demonstrates your need for training in ethics, as well as, your desire to take short cuts in development of teaching material.

However, it is likely too late for you to learn ethics.

Asking permission to copy our survey is not an example of ethical behavior.

Just in case you have any conscience, no, you may not copy our EthicsSurvey.com.  It is copyrighted.  It is our creation.  Create your own ethics survey... if you are able to.

Sincerely,
Technology America Corporation's Team Of Ethical People

Teacher's response:

I think I do have ethics that is why I asked you first before just copying your survey.  I will certainly make my own and let others know that they should not use your website.

Thanks,
[Name withheld]

Creative Team's response:

Dear [Name withheld],

Tsk. Tsk.  It is not ethical to threaten people who deny you permission to copy their work.

Good moral behavior is often as important as good ethical behavior.

Your threat demonstrates the limit of your ethics.  It quantifies the magnitude needed to push you into morally negative action.  That is,when you failed to get your way and did not receive permission to copy our site, you threatened us.

What a perfect ethics case study!

Sincerely,
Technology America Corporation's Team Of Ethical People

Teacher's response:

I most certainly did not threaten you, nor did I think I did not get my way.  I asked a question, you gave a very rude answer, and so I will now spread the word that you are not a site I would recommend for others to use.

Thanks,
[Name withheld]

Creative Team's response:

There was no response because an argument with people who replace logic with emotion is not often fruitful.

End of dialogue
Opinion:

It is fascinating to observe where we are today in our failing culture. The question each individual must ask himself and handle in daily life is:  "Should I remain removed from people who behave in this manner?"

This woman, who reacted just like some people react so often when driving, in discussions, at work, and in various sorts of conflict, is to use illogical thinking. She reacted in frustrated anger.  She had not been allowed to do what she intended to do.

This lady had thought enough of the survey to want to use it in her class.  However, once denied the right to copy it, she turned on the creators and owners.  She then lashed out, and specifying twice, that she will advise people to not use the survey.

This sort of person cannot handle criticism or rejection.  This sort of person must have his way or else....

As an example, let's consider a case wherein a driver feels rejected when disallowed from doing as she wanted.  Let us theorize that perhaps a light she was approaching has turned red before she could pass through the intersection.  These people take it personally and drive through the intersection with abandon disregarding their own and other's safety.

Not use the survey?  That means what?  Among her friends... colleagues?  With behavior such as documented above, she must have many friends and colleagues who have experienced her behavior and have appropriate respect for her.  It is quite possible that they will visit the EthicsSurvey.com simply to learn what might have enflamed this teacher!

People such as this are left with students in classrooms to TEACH.  No wonder our culture continues to decline.
